Kohala Mountain Road
Leaving Waimea we begin heading up Kohala Mountain Road on which you’ll be soaring into the sky like an io, the regal Hawaiian hawk, The swelling grassy slopes of the extinct volcano appear absolutely breath-taking, broken up periodically by graceful windbreak stands of eucalyptus and ironwood. If you’re fortunate enough to be out and about on a clear day, then you can see the telescope-studded top of Mauna Kea, or white mountain, ruled over during certain seasons by the Hawaiian snow goddess Poliahu.
