Mokuaikaua Church and Hulihe’e Palace
From here we move on to Mokuaikaua Church and Hulihe’e Palace, early 19th-century buildings constructed under the supervision of Governor Kuakini, brother of Queen Ka’ahumanu, influential favorite wife of Kamehameha the Great. Mokuaikaua, Hawai’i’s oldest church, erected at the request of the New England Congregationalist missionaries who arrived near Ahuena about a year after Kamehameha’s death.
Governor Kuakini was so pleased with Mokuaikaua Church that he put up a similar structure, Hulihe’e Palace, across the street on the ocean for himself and his family. This Palace subsequently became both a playground and a retreat for royalty, one of only three royal palaces in the United States, the other two being on the Island of Oahu. The Daughters of Hawai’i, Hulihe’e’s current caretakers and curators, can tell you fascinating tales concerning the famous individuals who either lived or visited here over the years. The palace is a great place to visit.
