North Kohala
Descending into the former plantation towns of Hawi and Kapa’au, you may feel as if you’re entering a time warp that whirls you backward 100 years. There are lots of old plantation buildings in this area.
This area is very laid back and can one get a sense of real peace being here, the restaurants and shops are a real treat for anyone wanting something off the beaten track.
On the southern outskirts of Hawi lays the birthplace of Kamehameha. An ancient sacred site for purification. , Mo’okini has been maintained for many centuries by multiple generations of the same Hawaiian family, The birthplace offers the opportunity to imagine how the powerful spiritual influences of these places must’ve made their mark upon Kamehameha as he matured to manhood.
These are locations are to be explored with extreme respect, if not reverence.
