Painted Church
Our next location to visit is the Painted Church It’s formal name is St. Benedict’s; and like its Hawaiian neighbor, the sanctuary walls are full of religious folk art created by the parish’s first priest in response to the discovery that a majority of his parishioners couldn’t read. Although literacy became a priority among Hawaiians before long, the art was so well-received that it’s been preserved for posterity visual storytelling has always been universally appealing anyway.
