Pu’ukohala Heiau
A National Historic Site that overlooks not only an underwater shark heiau, Hale o Kapuni, but also the ruins of what was once either an agricultural or a war temple, Mailekini. Upon this commanding promontory, the hill of the whale, Kamehameha fulfilled a further prophecy that predicted he would rule all the islands if he constructed a great heiau here to the war god Kuka’ilimoku, or Ku, according to exactingly detailed dimensions. He did so, hauling large ocean-smoothed lava stones down a 20-mile human chain from Pololu Valley to this destination, sweating in the hot sun alongside his laboring warriors, something hardly ever seen among royalty.
